Updates: Flyers Ink Sean O’Donnell to One-Year Deal

Posted in Flyer Thoughts with tags , , , on July 1, 2010 by Josh Getzoff

Per TSN’s Bob McKenzie, the Philadelphia Flyers have agreed to a one-year deal with former Los Angeles Kings defenseman Sean O’Donnell.

O'Donnell immediately makes the Flyers defense meaner

O’Donnell, at 38 years old, has seen his fair share of wear and tear during his 17 year NHL career, brings both experience and leadership to the Flyers in the signing.  Last season, for the LA Kings, O’Donnell posted totals of 3 Goals, 12 Assists, and 15 Points in 78 Games Played.  He also notched 70 penalty minutes.

O’Donnell likely will round out the Flyers last pair of defenseman if he can stay healthy, teaming up with either Braydon Coburn or Andrej Meszaros on the Flyers’ third pair. O’Donnell’s a hard-nosed kind of guy and someone who certainly will help bring a fiery edge to the team this year.  Here’s a look into the Flyers defensive pairings for next season.

Chris Pronger – Matt Carle

Kimmo Timonen – Braydon Coburn

Andrej Meszaros – Sean O’Donnell

…not too shabby.

Updates: Flyers Look to Strike a Deal w/Leighton Today

Leights may be back as the Flyers' #1 guy next season

Tim Panaccio tweeted earlier today that the Flyers are looking to come to terms with goaltender Michael Leighton on an agreement hopefully as early as today so that the goaltender can once again stand in between the pipes for the Flyers next season.

In 26 regular seasons starts with the Flyers last season after being claimed off waivers from the Carolina Hurricanes, Leighton went 16-5-2 with a 2.48 Goals Against Average, and .918 Save Percentage with one shutout.  He backstopped the Flyers to within two wins of claiming the franchises first Stanley Cup in over 35 years last season. It’s unclear as to whether or not Leighton is going to be the Flyers’ #1 guy in net next season, or whether the Flyers will look for another goaltender.  If it is Leighton, look for the Flyers to make a huge push when free agency begins at noon tomorrow for one of the top-rated defensemen this off-season in Paul Martin, Sergei Gonchar, or Anton Volchenkov.

Panaccio also just tweeted that the Flyers have interest in both Zybnek Michalek and Kurtis Foster, both slated to hit the free agent market as defensemen tomorrow and having played for the Phoenix Coyotes and Tampa Bay Lightning last season repectively.

Updates: Flyers Blindly Offer Contract to Coburn

Posted in Flyer Thoughts with tags , , , on April 5, 2010 by Josh Getzoff

It was made public yesterday that the Philadelphia Flyers offered a two year contract extension to defenseman Braydon Coburn, who’s current contract is set to make him a restricted free agent this summer.

Coburn is due to be an RFA in the summer of 2010

The interesting twist to the plot here is that Coburn was unaware of the contract offer, as Flyers General Manager Paul Holmgren only made the offer to Coburn’s agent. As Holmgren said, “Maybe the two of them need to communicate better.”
