USA Today: The First Meeting Since, Well, You Know When…

Posted in Flyers Thoughts, Game Previews with tags , , on January 23, 2011 by Josh Getzoff

…Unlike the last meeting between these two teams, there is no Stanley Cup on the line for the winner of this game.  With that being said, the Flyers need to make a statement Sunday afternoon in Chicago by showing the Blackhawks that while they may have been the better team last year, the Orange and Black are the team to beat this time around.  I expect them to do that, especially with no Dustin Byfuglien to worry about in a ‘Hawks sweater.

Updates: Carter Locked Up

TSN reports have been confirmed by Flyers beat writers Anthony San Filippo and Tim Panaccio that the Orange and Black have locked up sniper Jeff Carter to an 11 year deal worth $58 million.

The deal essentially means Carter will be a Flyer for life, and that the team’s offensive core of Carter, Mike Richards, and Claude Giroux will all be together for the next few seasons. More reaction after the game tonight.

UPDATE (5:50 PM EST): Bob McKenzie of TSN Tweets the Carter Contract breakdown:

According to various reports, the Philadelphia Flyers have acquired the rights to UFA Dan Hamhuis in exchange for Ryan Parent. The NHL has had an incredible string of commercials here in the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs.  Continuing on from their great “History Will Be Made” spots, the NHL came through with yet another strong ad last night.  If you missed it during the game, here it is: the NHL “No Words” Stanley Cup Commercial.  It’s great, give it a look.

Updates: Lappy A Budding Hero in Philly

Posted in Flyers Thoughts with tags , on April 25, 2010 by Josh Getzoff

Ian Laperriere’s iconic glow is continuing to grow in Philadelphia. The Flyers’ left winger and penalty kill extraordinaire added another piece to his growing legend in the series clincher over the New Jersey Devils this past Thursday, as he blocked a Paul Martin slapper with his face. After suffering a broken orbital bone, Lappy will be forced to wear a shield/visor for likely the remainder of his career as a safety precaution. However, no surgery is required, so Laperriere will be ready for Round 2. If the Flyers can watch Lapperiere’s grit, determination, and desire the rest of the way – and imitate it to the best of their ability – they may have some great opportunities available for them in the future. Until then, however, we sit and wait for Round 2, and a rejuvenated (and slightly repaired) Ian Laperriere.
