Bobby Clarke OK w/Someone Else Wearing 16?

“I think that it’s retired, and it’s an honor, but I have no problems if they wanted someone else to wear it. And I think it should be worn,” Clarke said Wednesday. “Our team was great, and we’re honored for playing this sport, our number’s up there – but it’s still gonna be up there.”

– Flyers legend Bobby Clarke, as quoted by Stephen Whyno of Philadelphia Sports Daily

…I’m just going to come out and say it: if ANY Flyer ever wears 16 besides Clarke, that is a flat-out disgrace.  Whether or not Clarkie’s OK with someone wearing #16 or not, it’s a sacred number in Flyer lore that should NEVER be worn again – it’s the principle: once a number is retired, especially if it’s the number of the greatest player in the history of your franchise, it’s retired.  And that’s just about all I have to say on that.
