Updates: Pronger Nearly Ready for Opener

When the Flyers open their season tomorrow night in Pittsburgh, there’s a good chance Chris Pronger will be manning the blue line for the Orange and Black.

The future Hall of Fame defenseman, who has been out of action since having arthroscopic knee surgery in July, has been on the road to recovery the past few weeks, and has joined his Flyers teammates on the ice this week in full pads and playing full-contact to get himself in the best position he can possibly be in to open up the season in Pittsburgh.

Pronger has been stellar on the blue-line since his arrival last season

CSNPhilly.com’s Tim Panaccio has more on Pronger, who, he says, is already in midseason form as far as his off-the-ice antics are concerned.  Panaccio makes note of the fact that Pronger’s constant ribbing of the media has returned to the Flyers’ practice facility in Vorhees and that teammate Matt Carle even joked with the 36-year old that, by way of having his surgery so late in the off-season, Pronger was pulling a “Brett Favre” in deciding to take a route that would allow him to miss Training Camp.

Having a healthy Pronger back in a Flyers uniform obviously immediately bolsters an already solid blue-line.  In practice, Prongs has been playing alongside Carle, his partner for much of last season.  Given the success the two had together, don’t be shocked to see that duo begin this season together as well.

The best part about the fact that the Flyers acquired Andrej Meszaros and Sean O’Donnell this off-season?  Not only does it give the Flyers two more bona-fide defensemen to add to what was already a terrific blue line, but it will cut down the ice time for the older legs of Pronger just enough so that he can remain a force for as long as possible in Orange and Black this season.
