Game Recap: Flyers vs New Jersey Devils

Flyers defeat New Jersey 4-3 in a shootout.  Here are my thoughts:

– James van Riemsdyk is showing zero signs of a Sophomore slump.  The weight added was obvious tonight and he’ll be able to use his size and speed to be incredibly effective.

-Danny Briere’s game-tying goal was eerily similar to his goal against New Jersey last year in the playoffs.  The difference?  In the long run, this one meant nothing.  Check that out here:

– Michael Leighton wasn’t bad, but he wasn’t all that great either.  Made some nice saves, second goal was weak.  In my opinion, first and third goals were out of his realm of control.

– Mike Richards, Jeff Carter, and Nik Zherdev looked VERY good tonight as a trio.  Could be lethal this season.

Jeff Carter showed signs of a productive season ahead with his play tonight

– Sergei Bobrovsky for Vezina.

– Jody Shelley (draw) and Matt Walker (loss) both fought in the game tonight.  Each was long, drawn out, and not all that entertaining.

– The Wells Fargo Center just looks and sounds weird.

– Bill Guerin found his legs in the later stages of the third period, but I wasn’t all that impressed.  That said, he better still make this team.

– Sean O’Donnell is going to be a great stay-at-home guy on the back-end this season.

– There were zero young players on the Devils that impressed me.  Zero.

– However, Ben Holmstrom played a pretty solid game.

– So did Darroll Powe and Claude Giroux.

– 1-0-0 in the preseason.  The season is officially here baby!
